They sit in silence for a long moment, simply watching the quiet park. “I can’t believe this place is out here,” she says finally.

“Yeah, Allen brought me here after I got out of the hospital.” She shifts on the bench. “It’s good to see some green, you know?”

The first woman is quiet a moment. “Why did you two get married?”

“So he could pay my medical bills. No, seriously, don’t look at me like that. Kentucky’s got some weird-ass laws about insurance coverage and billing and what-not. They wouldn’t let him pay unless he was family, so he decided to fix that little detail.”

“And what did you say to that?”

“I told him hell, no! I want kids.”

“Which he gave you eventually in any case.” She gestures to her friend’s swollen belly.

“And made up for the nine previous years in a hurry, let me tell you.” She groans and shifts again. “Next time he can lug them around.”

“I’m sure all pregnant women say that.”

“Oh, no doubt.”

They both look forward again. “Why did you say yes?”

“Because whatever else Allen may be, he is a heartfelt and sincere man. And because I’m selfish and didn’t want to die. Thirty-one is way too young to go – I wanted to live, even married to him, more than I wanted my hypothetical future children.”

“Has it been worth it?”

“It really has. I’ve never felt any less loved because I’m of the female persuasion.”

“You’ve never worried about him finding a twink on the side?”

“First off, hearing you of all people say ‘twink’ is absolutely hilarious. But no, he’s not that kind of guy. If he makes a promise, he does his utmost to keep it. I know I’m not the kind of person who gets him all hot and bothered, but I’ve never been less than satisfied, and – clearly – he doesn’t have any issues getting it up.”

She pauses, glances quickly at her friend and away again, then continues. “You know, I’m just going to come right out and say it. Kyle will never love you any less if you can’t get pregnant, nor would he ever walk away from you over it. And if he did, then he’s a lesser man than any of us gave him credit for.”

“He wants kids so bad, though.”

“He’s never looked at Cicely or Alexi any different – what makes you think he wouldn’t be open to adoption?”

“But…his family name…”

“That’s just an excuse, and a pitiful one at that. David already has a son – the name can pass down through him. And it will technically still pass down through any sons you adopt, too, they just won’t have the same medical history.”

“That’s an interesting way to put it.”

“But no less true. This is not on you, Lizzy.”

“Yes, it is. He’s just fine, according to all the tests. All my tests –“

“ – have come back inconclusive. And even then, it’s still not your fault. You haven’t done anything wrong.”

“I just. I want to make him happy.” She isn’t crying, but her voice quavers.

“Oh, Lizzy. Can’t you see he’s happy now?” She tucks her friend close to her side, and pulls her head down to her shoulder.
