WEATHER
Lightning,
and a woman breaks in two
Thunder,
and a man cannot construe
Rain,
and the child must now subdue
Clouds,
and family now taboo
Storm,
and the world begins anew
SONGBIRD
Why little songbird
do you no longer sing?
Did your heart break
with the coming of the spring?
In the hot days of summer
has your throat gone dry?
Too dry to sing,
so you wish to cry?
Fall so bright with colors
but still and quiet with no voice;
would you sing a sonnet
if you had a choice?
Does the winter cold
chill you to the bone?
Cold and stark and bleak and dark,
no warmth left in your home
Winter, summer, spring and fall
You simply cannot sing at all.

THE BREAKING OF A HERO
When she came at last to Lexington
by what she thought an act of serendipity,
she found instead she had been hood-winked,
led astray by the faint-remembered taste of sarsaparilla.
That knowledge caused in her heart combustion
So strong it left her cracked.
She reeled away from that city wounded,
mind as weak as over-cooked spaghetti.
Now as the world curves down
we come up short one more Princess Leia.
NOT MADE TO BE QUEEN
She holds herself carefully erect to give the illusion of height -
she drapes herself in cloth that lengthens the line of her figure
Her husband, epitome of an Orvaen male, towers over her,
overshadowing her with no heartfelt intention
The lines etched in the skin about her eyes
are from stress and strain more than laughter
Her mouth is smooth in speech, both formal and familiar,
but less quick to smile or grimace in genuine emotion
Her face is made of masks for every occasion, polite interest
and concern; she deigns to give you her attention
Her eyes are the shade of the evening sky as dusk approaches over water
Hair about her shoulders a golden hue that marked her ancestors strangers
Pale features on an otherwise dark palate give her an exotic visage.
She is foreign to this place she rules; she confronts that in the mirror daily
MOVE YOURSELF
Soaring high in a sky so blue
That mighty bird, the eagle.
Unlike people who use a taxi
And stronger than a swallow
The eagle gives no quarter
To those who would take his test.
If you find his terms agreeable
Look first for the stick, then the carrot.
Make your movements fluid;
Be the wrench and not the socket.
